Norma Jean Atherton, 87, of 7336 Ramsey Rd. passed away unexpectedly, Sunday September 20, 2015, at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester. Born April 27, 1928 in Salamanca, she was the daughter of Ceylon F. and Thelma V. Baldwin France. On October 7, 1948 at the Belfast First Baptist Church she married Jack S. Atherton who died March 28, 1986.
Norma had resided most of her life in the Belfast area and was a graduate of Belfast Central School class of 1947. She graduated from Nurses Aid School at Cuba Hospital and for a short period of time was a nurse's aid at Cuba Hospital. For several years she was a home health care worker in Allegany Co. and for many years was a nurses aid worker at Houghton Nursing Home, retiring in 1985. Norma had been a foster mother for many years, caring for many children. She also wrote and published poetry and was an amateur artist.
She was a member of the Belfast United Methodist Church, member of the Belfast PTA; had been a 4 H leader in Belfast; a Girl Scout den Mother; past member of the Friendship Swingers and member of the Allegany Co. Bird Club. Norma was also Foster Grandparents at Belfast Central School and Mrs Claus at breakfast with Santa.
Surviving are three sons, Bradley J. (Bonnie) Atherton, Timothy S. (Denise) Atherton, and Scott S. (Ann Galvin) Atherton all of Belfast; two daughters, Wende L. (Paul) Kenyon, and Patricia J. Atherton both of Belfast;
seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren; two sisters, Beverly K. (Larry) Moyer of Black Creek, and Rhonda N. (John) Kozlowski of Belfast; and several nieces and nephews.
Norma was predeceased by a grandson, Leigh Atherton; and a brother, Ceylon M. (Bud) France.
Friends may call at the Treusdell Funeral Home, Belfast 2-4 and 7-9 pm Wednesday September 23, 2015 where funeral services will be held Thursday, September 24, 2015 at 1:00 pm. The Rev. Nancy Russell, pastor of the Belfast United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Belfast Rescue Squad, the Allegany Co. SPCA or Life Net.
